Tonight is the biggest Awards show devoted solely to TV as The Emmys take place once again this year hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. This year I’ve chosen to focus on the comedy and drama categories due to the fact that the Mini-Series or Movie awards contain lots of shows and performances that haven’t made it onto these shores having said that I would like to see Sherlock win everything it possibly can.
Best Drama Series
Nominees: Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, Homeland and Mad Men
Thoughts: A really strong category this year and as a Brit I should really be rooting for Downton Abbey but personally I don’t think it holds a candle to the majority of the shows on offer here. My two favourites would be the gripping Homeland and the fantasy epic of Game of Thrones but though the latter has plenty of nods throughout I don’t think it’ll win here. As Mad Men wins every year it’s got to be the favourite once again but as Breaking Bad is in its final season and has been getting rave reviews from all corners since it started.
Who Should Win: Homeland as it had an incredible debut season and kept everyone gripped from beginning to end.
Who will win: I wouldn’t count against another Mad Men victory but I’ve got a feeling that Breaking Bad may just clinch it.
Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Nominees: Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey), Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Michael C Hall (Dexter), Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Damian Lewis (Homeland)
Thoughts: Four Americans who have been here before take on two British first time nominees in another interesting list which will see if Jon Hamm can finally beat Bryan Cranston to that elusive Best Actor Emmy. As it’s the last series of Breaking Bad I think Cranston’s got to be the favourite once again however Hamm has to be in contention for his return to form in Mad Men while Damian Lewis is definitely an outside bet as Brody in Homeland.
Who Should Win: For me it’s Lewis especially in the second half of Homeland where he was just fantastic.
Who Will Win: My money’s on Bryan Cranston.
Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Nominees: Kathy Bates (Harry’s Law), Glenn Close (Damages), Clare Danes (Homeland), Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife) and Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men)
Thoughts: I do think this is one of the clearer categories as Clare Danes’ performance in Homeland stands head and shoulders above the rest though all of these actresses are talented at what they do. If there’s an outside chance of anyone beating the Homeland actress it may be Moss whose crept up from being a supporting star to a lead actress as Peggy in Mad Men.
Who Should Win: Clare Danes for making Carrie one of the most interesting TV characters of the last few years.
Who Will Win: As I’ve made clear it’s almost certainly going to be Danes.
Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Nominees: Jim Carter (Downton Abbey), Brendan Coyle (Downton Abbey), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Jared Harris (Mad Men) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad)
Thoughts: An interesting one here as I’ve got half a mind that Breaking Bad may sweep the board meaning that either Paul or Esposito might nab this one this year also I’d look to the supporting categories for a possible Downton triumph with Coyle edging it over Carter for me. The strongest contender though would have to be last year’s winner Dinklage for totally convincing in his role as the Hand of the King in Game of Thrones.
Who Should Win: Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister once again knew how to play the Game of Thrones.
Who Will Win: I’m picking Dinklage but it may well be Paul.
Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Nominees: Christine Baranski (The Good Wife), Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey), Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad), Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife) and Dame Maggie Smith (Downton Abbey)
Thoughts: Six of the best actresses on the box fight it out in this one and three of them are Brits. Once again the Breaking Bad factor may count in Gunn’s favour while Panjabi is always excellent on The Good Wife though I feel this is where Downton will succeed with either Froggatt or Smith getting the award.
Who Should Win: For me it’s one of The Good Wife stars and once again I’d like to see Panjabi win as Kalinda is a great character.
Who Will Win: As she’s the member of the cast most associated with Downton Abbey I’d say that Dame Maggie Smith has the best shot out of the lot.
Best Comedy Series
Nominees: The Big Bang Theory, Curb You Enthusiasm, Girls, Modern Family, 30 Rock and Veep
Thoughts: Though not everybody’s favourites made the cut this year another strong year for comedy makes this hard once again. As with Mad Men, Modern Family have dominated this category for the past few years while 30 Rock has also done well in the past. This year though The Big Bang Theory has been incredibly popular with the fans while the critics have gone crazy for Veep and Girls.
Who Should Win: I’ve always had a fondness for Modern Family and 30 Rock’s returned to form this year but for me I’d loved to see Armando Ianucci get some recognition for the consistently funny Veep.
Who will win: It may well be Modern Family again but I’ve got a feeling that the equally popular Big Bang Theory could steal its thunder.
Best Actor in a Comedy Series
Nominees: Alec Baldwin (30 Rock), Don Cheadle (House of Lies), Louis CK (Louie), Jon Cryer (Two and Half Men), Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory)
Thoughts: An interesting mix of some who belong and some that don’t for example I’ve no idea what Don Cheadle is doing in this line-up. Former winners Baldwin and Parsons would be considered the favourites here but if there were to be a surprise then it would come in the form of Louis CK who has been gaining critical plaudits for his role in Louie.
Who Should Win: Parsons never fails to make me laugh so on that basis alone this prize should be his.
Who Will Win: I think Parsons unbeaten streak will continue with another win tonight.
Best Actress in a Comedy Series
Nominees: Zooey Deschanel (New Girl), Lena Dunham (Girls), Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie), Tina Fey (30 Rock), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep), Melissa McCarthy (Mike and Molly) and Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation)
Thoughts: Not quite sure why there’s seven names here but I find the Comedy Actress category is always the hardest to call with newbies Deschanel and Dunham in with a chance it’s veteran nominees Louis-Dreyfus who has to be the early favourite but I wouldn’t discount Poehler who has waited years to win this one.
Who Should Win: Nurse Jackie is possibly the strongest show on TV and once again Falco gave a cracking performance though it wasn’t particularly comic.
Who Will Win: A tough one to call but I think Louis-Dreyfus as Veep Selina Meyer will be the likely winner as it’s a critically loved show and she seems to be an industry favourite.
Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Nominees: Ty Burrell (Modern Family), Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family), Max Greenfield (New Girl), Bill Hader (Saturday Night Live), Ed O’Neill (Modern Family) and Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family)
Thoughts: As with last year all four of Modern Family’s main actors have been nominated so once again they have to be considered favourites and with Burrell and Stonestreet already winners I’d say it would either be Ferguson or O’Neill this year however the dark horse here is Greenfield who people seem to adore as Schmidt in New Girl.
Who Should Win: Ty Burrell for being the funniest actor in Modern Family which isn’t a mean feat.
Who Will Win: The great Ed O’Neill is surely due for recognition and I think only his TV son Jesse Tyler Ferguson will stop him from winning an Emmy.
Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Nominees: Mayim Bialik (The Big Bang Theory), Julie Bowen (Modern Family), Kathryn Joosten (Desperate Houswives), Sofia Vergara (Modern Family), Merritt Weaver (Nurse Jackie) and Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live)
Thoughts: Another great list of funny ladies and hard choice to be made as I think The Big Bang Theory will do extremely well Bialik could snap it while sentimental favourite the late Joosten may win the award. For me though it’s Modern Family once again and with Bowen winning last year the smart money has to be on Vergara.
Who Should Win: Again there’s the Nurse Jackie option so I’d love Weaver to win as the ditzy Zoe however I do also think Bialik is a great foil for Jim Parsons as Amy in The Big Bang theory.
Who Will Win: Vergara is certainly the smart bet however I’ve got a sneaking suspicion that Joosten may get a posthumous win.
So that’s your lot with ten predictions made see how right I am tonight where I will attempt to live blog the entire event join me from 11pm onwards.
